Grant Provides Sensory Equipment and Toys

« Return to News

Walter Lawson Children's Home was recently awarded grant funds from the William S. Howard Charitable Trust. This generous donation will be used to purchase twelve mobile sensory carts.

Each classroom, Day Training room and residential wing will receive a cart that contains items selected to delight the senses. Some of the particular items included are lamps that simulate ocean waves, kaleidoscope lights, disco balls and other light shows. In addition, portable sound machines, switch activated bamboo chimes and musical items will provide auditory input. Handheld and switch activated massagers, bead chains, vibrating pillows, fans and "squishy” mats will motivate students to use their sense of touch to explore their immediate environment. Aromatherapy fans and oils will infuse the air with pleasant and calming aromas. Several switches will allow residents to activate many of these items independently.

We greatly appreciate the generosity of the William S. Howard Trust and are thankful for their support of our individuals.
