Hi, I'm Katie! I will be running the Chicagoland Spring Half Marathon in Schaumburg, Illinois on May 20, 2018. This is my first time ever running this distance. Why would I do this you ask? As a mom of two young children, it is so easy to get caught up in the day to day stresses, but if you take a step back and take a look, we are so very blessed for what we have. Over the 9 years I have known my husband and his (now my) family, I have been so greatly inspired by my brother in law Chris, and his incredible son, Gavin. Our nephew, Gavin was born with Cornelia De Lange Syndrome. It is an extremely rare genetic disorder that causes a range of physical, cognitive, and medical challenges. Because of this, he requires round the clock care and currently resides at The Walter Lawson Children's Home in Rockford along with 99 children and young adults who have severe and profound developmental disabilities. Their mission statement is: Our purpose is to enhance the life of each individual we touch by exceeding expectations through compassion and love.
WLCH is a not-for-profit community and fundraisers/donations play an important role in funding projects that are not otherwise paid for by Medicaid. The staff at WLCH are simply amazing and spend a lot of their free time helping these children. Some staff members have even adopted some of the residents. At Walter Lawson Children's Home, they offer daily programs to emphasize different areas of skill development as well as offer individualized education programs from preschool to high school levels for it's residents. So on behalf of Gavin and all of the children and staff at the Walter Lawson Children's Home, I will run this half marathon.
I'm not asking you to run with me, but I am asking if you would like to make a donation of any size to help support my cause. Walter Lawson relies on the financial support of our many friends and benefactors. Your donation today will help provide a home of unconditional love and unlimited possibilities. Please help make a difference in the lives of some remarkable people!
